The purpose of this workshop is to encourage dialogue and exploration of the attendees' personal spiritual practices, the practices of Blacks throughout the Diaspora, and how they impact our practices within kink. This workshop aims to address two main points- that sexuality and spirituality do not have to be separate and that spiritual practices can speak to and promote sexual freedom and exploration that include kink and alternative sexualities.

We will discuss the decline of elder participation, how we are losing generations of experiences and stories and what we can do to improve that in our community. Since 1995, ONYX has established itself as a premier national leather organization formed and operated by POCs. This workshop will explore the why and the ways that ONYX and other groups and individuals have created further diversity and addressed the intersectionalities of race/gender within the Leather/BDSM community. Come hear the history and the perspectives of current elders and community members.

In this workshop we’ll examine research that links masochism to eating chili peppers, riding roller coasters, and climbing mountains, and sadism to Internet trolling and delivering noise blasts in a laboratory game. We'll also explore whether these types of "everyday sadism" have anything to do with consensual BDSM sadism.

The Science of BDSM

Scientists have begun to place BDSM under the microscope, producing theories that range from the insightful to the ridiculous. "The Science of BDSM" will explore the history of scientific research on BDSM, from early attempts by psychiatrists to pathologize sadism and masochism, to recent work by social scientists to understand the demographics of BDSM practitioners, the categories of BDSM activities, the hormonal effects of topping and bottoming, and the altered states of consciousness that BDSM activities can sometimes produce. The workshop will include a preview of studies currently underway by the Science of BDSM Research Team and an open discussion of the directions you think BDSM research should go.

With this class and demo we’ll go over safety and basic techniques for anyone just starting to look into violet wands and then move on to pervertables, electrodes, purchase & kit building strategies, using violet wands with other types of play, using it for its debated health benefits, and adding violet wands to your personal dynamic. This will be an interactive experience, so folks will be able to try a number of the things we go over. People with mechanical, solid state and/or neon wands are encouraged to bring their kits, this is a time to share some of your favorite things!

Restorative Justice in Kink

Proponents of Restorative Justice believe that when wrong doing occurs it impacts not only the victims but the the community and offender. It views wrong doing as break down in interpersonal and community relationships that create obligations to make the wrong right. It is the goal of this class to introduce this concept as it would contrast against criminal justice to 1) reveal what we think about justice 2) how that may positively or negatively impact the sense of community and 3) present Restorative Justice as an alternative model useful for kink communities b/c it focuses interpersonal relationships and repairing harm done.

This workshop explores stereotypes about Queer Femme identity within the Lifestyle on both sides of the aisle, and offers empowering takeaways to increase  confidence and awareness of this particular identity and the unique experiences of Queer Femmes. It challenges some of the more exploitative, queerphobic, and sexist traditions that can silence and/or jeopardize the safety of people who identify this way.

Mental Illness is one of those elephants in the room that you try to ignore. We go along pretending that it doesn’t exist and then act surprised when disaster strikes. We have put such a negative stigma on mental illness that people in the community are afraid to disclose when they have it or are walking around untreated because they are afraid to be diagnosed with it. This class is going to discuss mental illness, what it is, how it affects our relationships and our community. We will talk about ways to dispel the stigma and what things that we can do to help and understand this illness. People are hurting and dying because we keep ignoring this elephant.
